Lotus Flower

Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn (Sny. nelumbium speciosum Willd; Nymphaea nelumbo Linn)

There are three varieties:

  • White Lotus
  • Red Lotus
  • Blue Lotus

The entire plant (Padmini) alleviates kapha and pitta, aggravates vata, purifies the blood, strengthens the breasts, is constipative, and beneficial in worms, tuberculosis, vomiting, vertigo, fever, oedema, dysuria and toxicosis.

The tender leaves are useful in burning pains, thirst, dysuria, haemorrhoids and bleeding from internal organs.

The receptacle for the seed alleviates kapha and pitta, purifies the blood and cleans the mouth.

The filaments alleviate all the doshas, purify the blood, are aphrodisiac, constipative, appetizing, enhance the complexion and are used in haemorrhoids, thirst, toxicosis, burning pains, oedema, fever, ulcers in the mouth and tuberculosis. The remove the tendency to repeated abortions.

The seeds alleviate kapha and pitta, are constipative, aphrodisiac, strength giving, appetizing, digestive, emaciating, facilitate conception, purify the blood and are used in vomiting, burning pains and bleeding from internal organs.

The leaf-stalk alleviates pitta, aggravates vata and kapha, is constipative, hard to digest, aphrodisiac and purifies the blood. It improves lactation.

The honey from the flower alleviates all the doshas, is very nutritive and removes all eye diseases.

The white lotus plant is especially useful in eye-diseases, oedema, ulcers, fevers and blisters and boils.

The red lotus plant alleviates all the doshas, is nutritive, aphrodisiac and blood-purifier.

The blue lotus plant is aromatic, appetizing, beneficial to the hair, strength-giving and bestows longevity.
