"The berries have a pepperminty flavour and are a favourite food for grouse or wild turkey... The species was highly south after by American Indian women, who used the leaves and berries to brew a tea to aid in childbirth.

With its highly ornamental red berries and shiny, dark green leaves with greenish white veins, it has been overcollecte din some areas as a Christmas decoration." -
